The Morning After - France has voted

Online Event

The European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is very pleased to invite you to the next session of our event format "The Morning After". In this online format, we are monitoring the Parliamentary and/or Presidential Elections in European states and discuss the results with our KAS colleagues in the respective country. Furthermore, we try to assess the implications the result could have for the country’s relationship with the European Union. This session will focus on France, where the second round of the Parlamentary Elections is scheduled for 19 June 2022.

Details

The Parliamentary Elections in France, the second largest member state of the European Union, are often dubbed the "third round of the presidential election" because they traditionally take place in the same year. In recent weeks, a close neck-and-neck race between the "Ensemble" movement around President Emmanuel Macron and the left-wing alliance "NUPES" had been predicted for the first round of voting on 12 June. This proved true on Sunday, with "Ensemble" and "NUPES" tied with 25.75 per cent and 25.66 per cent of the vote respectively. Whether Macron's party will again win an absolute majority in the second round is therefore difficult to predict. With a non-voter share of 52.49 percent, a historic high was reached in the first round. The right-wing populist party "Rassemblement National" around Marine Le Pen was in third place with 18.68 percent, followed by "Les Républicains" around Christian Jacob with 10.42 percent. For Emmanuel Macron, the coming Sunday will decide to what extent he can keep his election promises, as he can only implement the reform agenda he announced in the presidential campaign with a parliamentary majority. In 2017, after the surprising coup in the Presidential Election, Macron also succeeded in the Parliamentary Election. His party achieved an absolute majority with 43.06 percent in the second round of voting, ahead of the "Républicains", who came second with 22.23 percent.

Who are the winners, who are the losers after the second round of the 2022 Parliamentary Elections? What conclusions can be drawn about the state of the political system in France after four rounds of elections in recent months? What impact do the political realities have on Emmanuel Macron's second term in office? Can a change in policy at national and European level be expected with a changed majority?

The event "The Morning After - France has voted" will take place on Monday, 20 June 2022 from 09:30-10:15 CET via Zoom. We are looking forward to discussing the above-mentioned topics with our colleague Caroline Kanter, Director of the KAS Office in France. After the conversation between Ms. Kanter and Dr. Hardy Ostry, Director of the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the audience will have the opportunity to contribute their questions to the discussion. The event will be held in German and will also be simultaneously translated into English.
