EU-Moldova Relations between EU Accession and Domestic Tensions

KAS Europe Talks

The European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is very pleased to invite you to the next session of our event format "KAS Europe Talks". In this format, the European Office regularly organizes a discussion with the Director of another KAS Office, focusing on recent devel-opments in the respective countries or regions as well as on the status quo of relations with the European Union. This event focuses on the Republic of Moldova and its relations with the EU against the backdrop of domestically turbulent times.

Details

The Republic of Moldova is currently the focus of political and media attention. The small country between Romania and Ukraine is facing great challenges: on the one hand, the pro-European government under President Maia Sandu wants to push ahead with the integration process; on the other hand, anti-Western forces are trying to prevent this goal and deepen ties with Russia. The invasion of Ukraine has turned Moldova into a frontline state and unsettled many citizens, especially because at the beginning of the war there was speculation that Russian troops might occupy southern Ukraine and thus establish a land corridor to Transnistria. This province is part of the Republic of Moldova under international law, but since the 1990s it has eluded the grasp of the Moldovan state - partly due to "peacekeepers" from Russia - and considers itself independent. Although this scenario could be prevented for the time being, Russia continues to wage a hybrid war and tries to destabilise Moldova, among other things, through disinformation campaigns. On 22 June 2022, the EU granted Moldova candidate country status, at the same time as Ukraine. Since then, several major events have underlined the country's pro-European path, such as the second summit of the European Political Community (EPC), which took place on 1 June 2023, and a major EU rally with tens of thousands of participants, at which the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, spoke.

Is Moldova’s goal of being a member of the European Union by 2030 realistic? Will Russia continue its hybrid war, fuelling anti-European sentiment? Can the government convince the people with its promise of a better, European future despite the many challenges?

The event "KAS Europe Talks: EU-Moldova Relations between EU Accession and Domestic Tensions" will take place on Wednesday, 05 July 2023 from 11:00 - 12:00 CET via Zoom. We look forward to discussing the above-mentioned topics with our colleague Dr. Brigitta Triebel, Director of the KAS Office in Moldova. After the conversation between Dr. Triebel and Dr. Hardy Ostry, Director of the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, participants will have the opportunity to contribute their questions to the discussion. The event will be held in German and will also be simultaneously translated into English. Please register here!
