After more than a year and a half Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz have agreed to form government of national unity to combat the Corona virus. This marks the end of almost seventeen months in which Israel has been ruled by a caretaker government since there hasn't been a clear majority in three consecutive national elections. The role of this new special emergency government in the times of the Corona crisis, which will have massive and unforeseeable social, economic and political consequences will be one focus of the event. Furthermore, the latest developments in EU-Israel relations will be discussed.
Particular attention will be paid to the new government: Netanyahu and Gantz are sworn in as prime minister and "deputy prime minister," while Gantz holds the office of defense minister for the first year and a half of the term. Gantz replaces Netanyahu, who has been in office for a total of fourteen years and faces trial on corruption charges, after one and a half year (in the middle of their three-year term). Critics doubt that Netanyahu would hand over power when the time comes — or even that the new government would last that long.
The relationship between the EU and Israel is traditionally very close and deep-rooted, however in recent years, the relationship has suffered slightly. How will relations between the EU and Israel develop in the future and what role will the new government play?
