KAS Europe Talks

EU-Latin America Relations between Partnership and Geopolitical Rivalries

The European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is very pleased to invite you to the next session of our event format "KAS Europe Talks". In this format, the European Office regularly organizes a discussion with the Director of another KAS Office, focusing on recent developments in the respective countries or regions as well as on the status quo of relations with the European Union. This event focuses on Latin America and its relations with the EU between partnership and geopolitical rivalries.

Details

Relations between the European Union and the countries of Latin America have grown historically and are multifac-eted. In addition to the political level, this applies above all to society, as many Europeans have emigrated to Latin America in several waves of migration, including in the last century. In recent months, the EU seems to have increas-ingly focussed on the countries of Latin America again, not exclusively but above all since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. This has once again made Europeans realise that international alliances and a diversi-fication of economic cooperation are of crucial importance in order to be able to respond appropriately to the current geopolitical challenges. At the centre of economic cooperation is the free trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur states, which has been in the negotiation process for many years and which many decision-makers at Euro-pean level believe should be concluded as quickly as possible. In addition, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EPP President Manfred Weber, among others, made it clear during visits to the region that the partnership with the Latin American states should also be expanded in numerous other areas in order to deepen cooperation between democratic states against authoritarian influences.

What current developments have recently characterised the domestic political debate in Latin American countries? Which forms of cooperation would be particularly desirable from a Latin American perspective and which would not? Has the opinion Latin American assessment of the European Union changed in recent years?

The event "KAS Europe Talks: EU-Latin America Relations between Partnership and Geopolitical Rivalries" will take place on Wednesday, 22 November 2023 from 15:00 - 16:00 CET via Zoom. We look forward to discussing the above-mentioned topics with our colleague Sebastian Grundberger, Director of the KAS Regional Programme Party Support and Democracy in Latin America. After the conversation between Mr Grundberger and Dr. Hardy Ostry, Di-rector of the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, participants will have the opportunity to contribute their questions to the discussion. The event will be held in German and will also be simultaneously translated into English.
