With accelerating globalization more and more people find employment abroad. Labor migration has become a normal fact of life. Also many Chinese migrate. Some are seconded by their Chinese companies. Some look for employment individually. Some migrants will stay permanently. Some will return to their country of origin after retirement. Some might decide to take up residence in a third country. This trend has required adjustment of the national social security systems which had not been required hitherto.
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has established a study group to look into this matter. The group was headed by Prof. Wang Yanzhong, Director of the Research Center for Labor and Social Security of the Academy. Wei Anan from the Social Insurance Management Center of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and other scholars from CASS and the Renmin University made contributions to this work.
On behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung the study group provides a report on their work which is made available on-line. The report recounts the history of bilateral and international social security agreements world wide. It provides a status report on the matter internationally and puts particular emphasis on the Chinese situation. Challenges ahead round up the report.
