Along with its continual growth and low investment costs, China remains an attractive location for companies from all over the world. Germany has been the most important investment partner of China in Europe for several years. However, along with an increasing number of opportunities, there are also more and more risks associated with an investment in China. As such, the competition with local Chinese firms has become more frequent in recent years. Furthermore, German companies invest much in the qualification of their employees, who in return often leave for higher-paying competing companies. In order to continue to benefit from China’s economic growth, German companies will need to respond in a flexible manner to the continually changing landscapes of China’s economy.

In this interdisciplinary discussion round, the KAS|Beijing addresses the direct influence that China’s economic policies exert on German investors and companies. The transition of China into a system which is increasingly based on market economic principles will be at the centre of the debate. Which concrete risks do German firms encounter on China’s market? To what extent do higher wages play a role in investment-decisions? What effect do China’s changing economic principles have on German businesses?

This talk is part of the lecture series of KAS|Beijing in which young talented German researchers, Chinese and international experts, academics and representatives of think-tanks discuss current issues in the areas of law, economics, and cultural policies in the context of 40 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and China.
