Details

Between March and June 2014 KAS Shanghai realises a new project "Urban Campus Chengdu 2014" to develop creative ideas for a sustainable urbanization in Chengdu. This project is carried out in collaboration with Sichuan University and conceptualized with support of the Shanghai based consulting agency CONSTELLATIONS International. During an initial workshop in April, local projects shall pitch and stretch their individual ideas into first business models – all steps of development are coached by different experts. The second phase (April–June) focuses on the development of a workable project concept to be tested in different urban spaces. From June on the concepts will be fully implemented.

The concept of "Urban Campus Chengdu 2014" is responding to the following challenges of current urbanisation in China:

  • Education: How could we generate new ways of learning more sustainable behaviors?
  • Sustainable consumption: How could we change the consumption patterns of the city population of Chengdu?
  • Public participation: How could the citizens of Chengdu getting involved in political decision processes on urban development?
  • Culture and heritage urbanization: How could we reconcile modernity and tradition?
China's Premier LI Keqiang indicates the relevance of these questions as well, when he emphasized the importance of the social impact in his call for a “new type of urbanization”.
