Energy Integration in Latin America: Opportunities and Challenges

Regional energy integration is a hotly debated topic in Latin America, with some stakeholders indicating that there is huge untapped potential, while others are notably skeptical. In order to encourage debate and the promotion of knowledge on the subject, we signed an alliance to explore the subject, with the CEBRI-Brazilian Center for International Relations and Catavento. That discussion benefited from a debate that occurred on September 3, 2020.

In 2016, the Brazilian hydroelectric power plant Itaipu obtained the highest energy production worldwide, surpassing China and the United States. But the gigantic Itaipu plant is not only Brazilian, it is a binational company also managed by Paraguay.

If they could reach this level with a single alliance, the question arises: where else could we go with greater energy integration in Latin America?

This study aims to consolidate and deepen the points discussed at the event. Through the analysis of technical publications, data and facts, it seeks to evaluate the past experiences of the region in terms of energy integration, reflect on the lessons learned, and analyze the future potential of greater integration with a view to the future of energy that it develops from global macro trends.
