Details

With average annual growth rates of 5 % Latin America has presented itself as a dynamic and pulsating economic area in recent years. This growth results from macroeconomic and political stability, high commodity prices on the world market, and an expansion of the domestic markets due to decreasing poverty and an expanding middle class. However, growing energy demands and climate change pose new challenges to the region, which can only be tackled through increasing efficiency in the usage, transport and generation of energy, as well as promoting the usage of renewable energies. Even though many German companies already export the respective technologies to Latin America, there is still significant room to grow. In return, the German high-tech industry has taken a large interest in securing the supply with metals such as copper and lithium that are abundant in South America.

To aid this process, the 1st German-Latin American Energy Conference that took place in Lima in October 2013 created a network for decision makers from the energy and commodity sectors of both regions. First cooperative projects have already emerged from this network within the last 12 months.

The second conference of the network will be held in Santiago de Chile. Representatives from the energy and commodity sector of this year’s focus country Chile, the other member states of the Pacific Alliance (Peru, Colombia and Mexico), and further emerging economies of the region will discuss the opportunities and potentials of bi-regional energy and economic relations with their German counterparts. The conference offers a platform to expand their networks and initiate concrete projects of collaboration. In terms of content the focus of the event will be on commodity exports, the decentralised supply of renewable energies and the expansion of the electricity grid.
