Details

The international environmental law is a legal branch in ongoing formation and transformation. Multiple environmental degradation factors alter ecosystems and endanger the quality of human life and the human survival on the planet itself, such as the pollution, in all its forms, and other impacts of human activities strengthened by the application of technologies even more powerful and dangerous and the thoughtless use of natural resources. However, the greatest challenge facing the humanity and international environmental law in the XXI century is the climate change, which gave check-mate at the contemporary societies´ pattern of development, deeply dependent on the use of fossil fuels.

There is an obvious clash between the environmental protection and the current energy matrix concerning the renewable energies application. That clash provides a deep discussion, especially when it is verified, for example, that in Latin America, just a small part of the energy matrix come from renewable energies (sugarcane, biomass, fuelwood, hydraulic, among others). In this context, EKLA-KAS and CEDIN (International Law Center) proposes a project that seeks to understand not only the role of regulation on the environment in Latin America, but to go beyond and to analyze the sustainable development of the countries of region.

An international seminar will be held aiming to debate the normative and institutional aspect of the access to clean energy and the impact of the SDGs to the human development. This seminar will include the participation of renowned professors, technical professionals on energy access and policy makers of Latin American States, specially Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico, to discuss topics relevant to energy access in the region. It will also analyze the goals of Sustainable Development and other normative framework with the objective of stipulating proposals to guarantee clean energy to the entire rural population.

During three days of seminar, the attending professionals will present lectures and deliberate with each other in panel discussions about the options, demands, solutions and challenges to a national or regional plan to ensure clean energy access to the population living in the countryside of Latin America. A joint publication on Sustainable Development and Energy Matrix in Latin America will also be launched at this seminar.

The event will be open to the public and we will provide simultaneous translation in Portuguese and Spanish at all times.
