Green hydrogen (H2), as a clean energy, is on the watch of most countries currently striving to reduce their carbon footprint and meet climate protection targets – by both governments and private companies. However, there is still widespread ignorance about the benefits of hydrogen, its different possible ways of generating it – which define whether it is a “clean” or “unclean” hydrogen – and questions about its specific future role in countries' energy matrices, including the important aspect of its international commercialization.
It is a great challenge, both for governments and private companies, to develop this new energy market in an integrated way, considering security, certification and international cooperation.
Several countries, including both Europe and Latin America, are already taking concrete first steps to integrate green hydrogen into their energy matrices. Both Chile and Germany have already published roadmaps for their national green hydrogen market development, both seeking to cooperate with other countries to optimize the demand and supply of low carbon hydrogen, and thus contribute jointly to the decarbonization of global economies. Other countries in the Latin American region are currently designing national development strategies and first pilot projects for low-carbon hydrogen generation, such as Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.
