Details

Since 2008, Brazil has a National Climate Change Plan aiming to coordinate and foster mitigation actions in the country, contributing to the international efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions and to create internal conditions to deal with climate change impacts (adaptation). In order to implement the National Climate Change Plan, the National Policy established the elaboration of Sectorial Plans presenting mitigation actions, indicators and specific goals, as well as verification mechanisms. Among nine sectorial plans, there is the Low Carbon Industry Plan (LCIP), issued in June of 2013, which establishes a reduction target of 5% over the projected 2020 emissions of the eight major industrial emitting sectors. Much more relevant than the target in itself are the five thematic streams proposed by the Plan: carbon management; recycling and use of co-products; energy efficiency and co-generation; voluntary initiatives; and sustainable technologies.

Building from the Latin American experience, the strategic objective of this project is to contribute towards a competitive low carbon Brazilian industry by proposing instruments needed for the implementation of the Low Carbon Industry Plan (LCIP) concerning the increase of renewable energy participation on the industrial energy matrix.

A closed workshop will be organized by the Regional Programme Energy Security and Climate Change in Latin America (EKLA-KAS) and the Center for Sustainability Studies (GVces) of the Business Administration School of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV-EAESP) in São Paulo to present the conclusions of a study on the Panorama of Renewable Energy: the Industrial Sector in Latin America. The main goal of this publication is to evaluate how new and efficient economic instruments and public policy proposals could foster renewable energy in the Brazil, based on case studies (Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Colombia).

Heloísa Schneider (ECLAC), Maria Netto (IDB) and Renata Camargo (WWF) confirmed their participation in the debate of the results of this study.
