Who are the winners and losers of low oil prices in Latin America? How global oil price developments affect the Venezuelan economy? Does the Paris Agreement help the breakthrough of renewable energies in Latin America? These and other questions were discussed at an Experts' Meeting organized by the Regional Programme EKLA-KAS on June 22, 2016 at the Academy of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin.
Experts from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Mexico and Venezuela participated with presentations on the challenges for energy policy in Latin America. The presentations were followed by comments and questions from the audience, attended by European experts and members of the German public and private sector.
In addition to discussing climate security, water scarcity and the future of energy supply, one of the objectives of the meeting was to reflect on possible ways to promote energy policy cooperation between Latin America and Germany.
A trend of liberalization of energy market in Latin America is currently taking place, which leads to an opportunity for the foreign policy of the German energy transition. Especially supranational platforms such as the Pacific Alliance, AILAC or MERCOSUR provide a solid basis for dialogue.
