Workshop 1: Political Parties and Climate Change

Event report

In the warm city of Panama, the first of two workshops was held this 2022 of our project "Political Parties and Climate Change", with the participation of 13 representatives of political parties from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Panama, related to the KAS Foundation.

The workshop had 2 defined parts, the first being the analysis and debate on how the Circular Economy can be an excellent tool for political parties to include in their programmatic axes, given that its approach considers the economic, social and environmental components, that is, fully fits into the concept of sustainable development.

Latin American politics tends to displace environmental issues to the periphery of decisions, even creating narratives with false dilemmas that confront economic progress with care for the environment, dangerous discourses that in the medium term create social conflicts, such as those that multiply in the region.

Given this, the circular economy emerges as a tool that makes it clear that there can be no economic progress if there is no real awareness of the impact on the environment and for this it proposes industrial reconversion strategies where production moves from a linearity that consumes resources and generates waste in unsustainable quantities towards a circularity that makes the most of resources and generates the minimum of waste.

The second part of the workshop was dedicated to Political Marketing so that the participants begin to acquire skills and techniques on how to present environmental/climate proposals in their political parties and these are heard, analyzed and approved in their programmatic lines as something important, which will pay off prestige and popularity to their organizations.

For this, it is essential to persuade with evidence and have ways of communicating that convince supporters that it is time to add the environmental issue to the proposals of the parties, from a centrist and above all democratic vision. It is necessary to empathize with the supporters, to involve them on an emotional level through stories that can be understood and assimilated as if it happened to a family member or close friend. Be assertive, close and urgent, but not catastrophic.

The work with the group of politicians will continue in a second workshop to be held in Montevideo in 2022. We will have more news soon.
