The rule of law is one of the fundamental values of the Union, enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union. It is also a prerequisite for the protection of all the other fundamental values of the Union, including for fundamental rights and democracy.
What are the new challenges? And what are the perspectives for the rule of law in Europe? Renowned speakers from Greece and abroad discussed this highly relevant topic.
On Thursday 18 February 2021, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, in cooperation with the think-tank e-Kyklos and the Center of International and European Economic Law, organised an online discussion on "Rule of Law in the EU: Challenges and Perspectives". The event was introduced by an opening speech by the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou .
Participants of the discussion were Margaritis Schinas (Vice-President of the EU Commission and responsible for the promotion of the European lifestyle), Evangelos Venizelos (f. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Greece), Vassilios Skouris (President at the Centre for International and European Economic Law CIEEL, f. President at the Court of Justice of the EU) and Angelika Nußberger (f. Vice-President at the European Court of Human Rights (EGMR)).
