In the forefront of this year’s general election in India, analysts give an important role to the current small coalition parties of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as well as other small parties which are not in coalitions but have a regional electorate. Already during the last general elections in 2009, regional parties presented themselves as an important political power in the parliamentary system. Generally, there is a change in the political agenda and election topics of the regional parties in India as well as a more fragmented party system.
