CHINA AND THE WORLD IN THE COMING DECADE

FSI-KAS SEMINAR ON A RISING CHINA

On 22nd and 23rd November 2016, Forum for Strategic Initiatives (FSI) in partnership with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), organised a national seminar on trends and developments in the China-Indian relationships and what the rise of China entails and our policy options to shape this relationship. Prominent speakers included Ambassador Shyam Saran, former Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Shivshankar Menon and also Professor Emeritus John W. Garver, who specializes in China’s foreign relations.

Other known intellects were Dr. Arvind Virmani, President of FSI, Ambassador Nalin Surie, Professor Alka Acharya, Director and Senior Fellow of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi, Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, Foreign Editor of the Hindustan Times, Lt. Gen. SL Narasimhan AVSM, Jayadeva Ranade, President of the ‘Centre for China Analysis and Strategy’ Ambassador Lalit Mansingh, Mohan Guruswamy, chairman of the Centre for Policy Alternatives, Dr. Sanjaya Baru Distinguished Fellow, United Service Institution of India, C. Raja Mohan, director of Carnegie India.

The seminar focused on political development in China leading to economic growth around the world, followed by rapid militarization. These discussions included larger questions whether these major changes would make 21st Century that of China. Very interestingly China’s relations with other countries like, the US and Chinese role seem to have undergone a complete reversal. Also discussed was the discernible shift to the political right as well as towards an increasingly inward-looking policy in the US, Europe and many other countries in Latin America and Asia.
