Graduation of the fifth batch of the Statesman Print Journalism School (SPJS)

On 9 May 2013, the KAS partner organization C. R. Irani Foundation and the SPJS organised their annual convocation program in Kolkata which marked the graduation ceremony of the current fifth batch of students of print journalism. The certificates were handed over to the nine graduates by senior journalist Hiranmay Karlekar. The ceremony was attended by guests from the media and economic sector and the German Consulate General.

After an introduction on the activities of SPJS by Swapan Mullick, Director SPJS, the German Consul-General, Rainer Schmiedchen, highlighted the important role that media play in a society and the challenges young journalists are facing in India and worldwide. Tomislav Delinic, acting Head of the KAS Office India, underlined the project’s alumni system which would allow the outgoing and former SPJS graduates to meet their regional counterparts and to establish life-long networks among young print journalists. All speakers saw the SPJS playing an important role in improving and intensifying German-Indian bilateral relations. The final remarks were directed to the audience by Ravindra Kumar, Chief Editor of The Statesman.

The training of selected young print journalists according to international standards is a main focus of activities of KAS in India in order to strengthen independent media. The Statesman Print Journalism School (SPJS) had been established in August 2008 on the initiative of KAS and C. R. Irani Foundation which is affiliated with the Statesman daily newspaper.
