The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles

An Opportunity for Global Supply Chains

Parliamentary State Secretary Fuchtel said: „India – as one of the globally most significant cotton producer – is a key country for the textile and garment industry. Therefore, it is a crucial partner for our goal of a sustainable textile supply chain, from Cotton Field to Hanger.” India produces 24 % of the global cotton. At the same time, India is one of the few countries in Asia to cover the complete value chain of the textile industry – starting with the availability of the raw material, across the productions of yarn and fabric until the manufacturing of finished products. Nationwide, around 35 Million people are working in the Indian textile and garment industry.

The Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr. Gerd Müller, initiated the foundation of the Partnership on Textiles on October 16, 2014, to improve the social, ecological and economic conditions throughout the complete textile value chain. The Textile Partnership has currently around 160 Members, who represent approximately 45 percent of the German Textile retail market.

The implementation of a sustainable textile value chain from Cotton Field to Hanger is only possible in standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the governments of the production countries and the buyer countries as well as international sustainable initiatives.
