Event reports
According to the transition strategy the ISAF troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Till the date of withdrawal it is necessary to strengthen the development of institutions responsible for the country’s future. In particular this is true for political institutions such as government and parliament as well as for security in terms of police and army. Facing weak institutionalism and resurgence of the Taliban movement, Afghanistan stands at crossroads.
Future development in Afghanistan will have a strong impact on the whole Central and South Asian region. Beyond its influence in the region and within specific schools of thought of Islam, the threat of radicalisation and extremism might have an impact on the whole European region. The question now is how the external actors will perceive Afghanistan after ISAF withdrawal and what results can be achieved by means of improved economic cooperation in the region.
Experts from Russia, Uzbekistan and India participated in the conference. In June, a follow-up conference with the same participants will take place in Wackerbarth, Germany.
