WAN-IFRA and KAS: World Editors' Forum

From 19th to 21st February 2019 the WAN-IFRA, World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, organised the 8th digital conference on the theme "Driving Revenue in Digital" for news publishers which brought ideas on digital trends, technology and innovations, vernacular advertising, Indian language web and revenue strategies together.

Parallelly to the conference, “Newsroom Summit 19” was also organised by WAN-IFRA and powered by World Editors Forum India Chapter in partnership with KAS and other esteemed media partners like Google News Initiative, protecmedia NEWSTECH and Facebook. During the three days Summit the experts discussed Newsroom transformation, Journalism in digital world and Fake news as well as the development of a ‘Newsroom Culture’.

In his closing Keynote at the summit, Mr. Pankaj Madan, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, laid emphasis on Media’s importance that “one of the most challenging things about the changing nature of the public’s relationship to media and the government’s relationship to media is that media has never been stronger than it is now”. He pointed out that more often than not, how democratic is a democracy was measured by the yardstick ‘How free is the Media’.

The Workshop on: “Building a Newsroom Culture” on 21st February 2019 was led by Michael Cooke, Outgoing Editor of Toronto Star, Canada and Murdoch Davis, Davis, Cooke Media, USA.

Mr. Pankaj Madan, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung also mentioned in his remarks that Press is the huge pillar of democracy and this training should enable them to excel in their field.

The Trainers gave insights on different phases of investigative reporting to the participants. This included the structure of investigation team, identification of stories, which shall comprise of elements like greed, power, money, pride & sex, execution of the plan and last but not the least also about the problems and risks associated while covering such stories.

During the workshop practical knowledge through case studies were shared to make an ordinary story an interesting one.

The Trainers, further in their presentation, also highlighted that “investigative journalism is not just a ‘Product’. It is a service that can make people’s lives better”.
