What do the SDGs mean for the Kingdom of Cambodia? Despite their importance for sustainable development in Cambodia the implementation comes not without questions: What are the key challenges in SDGs‘ nationalization and stakeholders engagement? What progress did Cambodia made so far with its SDGs approach and what challenges is it facing? Which role does the civil society play in the nationalization process? Those and many other questions will be answered at the Public Discussion on the topic of “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Cambodia: Roadmap, Stakeholders and Challenges”, which is jointly organized by KAS and the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP). Experts from different areas will share their opinions and thoughts regarding those questions, followed by a panel discussion on the topic of “The Nationalization of SDGs in Cambodia: Challenges and Opportunities”.
On the 25th September 2015, the UN Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. The Global Goals replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which ended in 2015 after a 15-year agenda and drove progress in several important areas like income poverty, access to improved sources of water, primary school enrollment and child mortality. This new development agenda applies to all countries, promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, creates better jobs and tackles the environmental challenges of our time. Furthermore, it calls out to all governments, developed and developing, to work together to achieve the united vision of a combining environmental sustainability, economic development and inclusion.
