Most Malaysians see elections from the perspective of a voter. As a voter, you know whether the vote you are casting is for a Member of Parliament or a State Assembly person. You know the political party represented by the candidates. Most voters assess the candidates and political parties from what they see, hear and experience, both before and during the election campaign. But what is an election like from the perspective of the candidate? Do candidates and political parties face problems in conveying their message to the public during an election campaign? Are there restrictions with regard to access to the media and the holding of campaign rallies? How are elections funded? Are there limits to how much a candidate can spend in an election campaign? What role does the Election Commission play? What are some of the reforms that can be adopted to improve how elections are conducted in Malaysia?
In the Parliamentary Elections and Funding forum, you can hear from Members of Parliament and academics, and question them on the issues faced by parliamentarians during elections.
