Study and information programme
Details
The goal of the KAS/NSJ advanced journalism series is to enhance the capacity of the media in Sub-Saharan Africa to provide critical and in-depth coverage in varying formats on a range of areas in order to sustain democracy and democratic institutions and improve the quality of the lives of the people. Hence the natural choice of "Reporting Politics" as the first workshop in this three year programme.
The workshop was facilitated by Namibian based media trainer and author Willie Olivier.
Using a combination of classroom based teaching, excursions, practical writing exercises and distance assignments the course explored democracy, political concepts, human rights and the African Union. The workshop was deliberately timed to coincide with a meeting of the African Union (AU) to allow participants to report and explore the workings of the successor body to the Organisation of African Unity.
Subjects remaining include national and international economics, science and technology reporting, media management and research, training of trainers, media policy and reporting Africa.
All participants in this series were pre-selected in 2003.
