Workshop
Details
Journalists from Kenya’s biggest radio stations were represented at the KAS media workshop from 19 – 29 June this year in Kenya. But also participants from remote regions of the country welcomed the invitation of the KAS Media Programme and travelled to Nairobi to learn more about their role as “watchdog” in the countries challenging process of democratisation.
Useful information, analysis and critical reports – that’s what the content of their work should be made of which they prepared together with a team from Radio Deutsche Welle (DW) during the course. The ten participants organised interviews with speakers from the political spectrum in Nairobi. They also engaged with enthusiasm in the task to go out into the suburb Karen as well as into the densly populated township Kibera to get the view of different voter groups. The questions were centered around current affairs and those topics relevant for the presidential elections at the end of 2007.
After three days of debates about theoretical issues the workshop venue had transformed into an editing suite and DW assisted in the production of a ten minutes broadcast magazine. The participants chose “jingles” and suitable formats for their stories. Apart from that, they also gave interviews in Swahili für DW Europe. To put into practice the theory of good journalism – that was the aim of the course. And well balanced radio clips with interesting sound bites were part of the good result.
