Event reports
Journalism in Africa – There is still a lot to be done
Every participant informed in presentations about the state of their journalism schools. Besides quality of newspapers, they discussed, e.g. about gender-related aspects of this profession. What challenges face female journalists in media departments and how they can be addressed to reach gender equality?
Furthermore, the educators were concerned with their own work which seems to have room for improvement in many areas. One participant, reported that, indeed, journalism pupils are trained in the Democratic Republic of Congo but none of the nine training institutes possesses a newspaper, radio or tv station. Therefore, the pupils could not be practically trained.
Lecturers call for stronger co-operations
The participants, which later also attended the Power Reporting Workshop (Investigative Journalism), assessed that these two events would be profitable for their own work. They agreed to forge strong relevant co-operations between themselves, the University of Witwatersrand and KAS Media Programme.
