Mandela Day 2016

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” said Nelson Mandela. In remembrance of his struggle for peace and democracy Nelson Mandela International Day was launched on 18 July, 2009 - Madibas birthday - via a unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

It is a global call to action for citizens of the world to take up the challenge and follow in the formidable footsteps of a man who transformed his life, served his country and freed his people.

Since Mandela gave 67 years of his life to the struggle for human rights and social justice the Mandela Foundation asks people around the world to donate 67 minutes of their time on 18 July to help those less fortunate.

KAS Media Africa took up the challenge and spent the day at the Friedenskirche Lutheran Church in Hillbrow, Johannesburg where the Outreach Foundation has been offering a range of arts and educational support programmes to the inner-city community since 1998. Their various projects give children, youth and adults the opportunity to engage with arts, culture and activities that facilitate communication, social participation and community building.

Working alongside the staff of the German Embassy in Pretoria, the team laid a new lawn, painted a community workshop space and cooked for the youth and Mandela Day workers. At the end of the productive day the Outreach Foundation thanked the volunteers with two great performances by the Hillbrow Music Centre and of the Hillbrow Theatre Project.
