There is hope

by Dr. Vladimir Zlatarsky

Seventh Adenauer Lecture in SEE on the future of journalism

“There is hope for journalism, but serious efforts should be made,” said Markus Spillmann, founder and owner of the SPILLMANN Publizistik Strategie Management GmbH in Zurich, and former editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) at the Adenauer Lecture. The event took place in November 2024 in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Spillmann talked to students, journalists and media experts about issues of the journalism profession, such as economic factors and quality.
Big tech companies like X (Twitter), Tiktok, Telegram or WeChat, mislead people in thinking they are having an information advantage. “Even if a large part of this information consists of rumours, lies and malice,” said Spillmann. On the other hand, Spillmann said, artificial intelligence is making its way into the industry. In the US, instead of hiring editors, licenses for ChatGPT were being purchased.
According to Spillmann, the media is also contributing to this crisis. The proximity between journalists and decision-makers is growing in many cases. “But the situation is not hopeless, journalism has the chance to renew itself,” concluded Spillmann.
