Global Europe Illustrated: EU Member States voting on Tariffs - EV China

On 4th October 2024, European Union Member States approved the European Commission's proposal to impose definitive countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China. Out of the 27 Member States, only five Member States, including Germany, opposed the tariffs, while 12 others abstained.

  • As a result, 10 votes were sufficient to grant the European Commission the authority to impose the tariffs. This decision followed an extensive investigation by the European Commission, which found that Chinese BEV production had been unfairly subsidized by the Chinese government, giving it a competitive edge over European manufacturers.
  • The move is part of the EU's broader "de-risking" strategy, aimed at reducing economic dependence on China while safeguarding European competitiveness.

About this series

“Global Europe Illustrated” is a section with a series of published maps designed to provide an insight into the EU's foreign policy ambitions in various regions. Each thematic map in the series focuses on the EU's global engagement in the context of EU election observation missions, global gateway projects and bilateral and multilateral EU summits and ministerial meetings with participating partner countries. In addition, each map is accompanied by a brief political analysis that provides nuanced views on what the map says about the EU's foreign policy objectives in the respective region and how these efforts are perceived.
