Summit of the Future: Advancing African Perspectives for a Networked and Inclusive Multilateralism

On February 1, 2024 the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) Office in New York and International Peace Institute (IPI) convened a conference in Addis Ababa on the "Summit of the Future: Advancing African Perspectives for a Networked and Inclusive Multilateralism," providing a platform for the diplomatic community, representatives of international and regional organizations, and members of civil society in Africa to reflect on the continent's priorities for the Pact of the Future and opportunities for collective action.

Amid growing conflict, widening inequality, and unprecedented challenges, the multilateral system is falling short of delivering outcomes for everyone, everywhere.

The Summit of the Future—which will take place in September 2024 at the United Nations in New York and culminate in an intergovernmentally-negotiated Pact for the Future—offers a critical opportunity to reinvigorate multilateralism and better prepare the international system to respond effectively to exisiting and emerging threats and opportunities. In the lead-up to the Summit, greater efforts are needed to leverage the voices and perspectives of a wide range of stakeholders, including those from Africa.

The event provided a much-needed platform for dialogue between the United Nations in New York and African Union in Addis Ababa to ensure greater awareness of the Summit and adequate recognition of African views on the Pact for the Future.

Key findings and recommendations from the discussion are available to download.
