A major challenge and thus a focal concern for the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs is a worsening reputation of the Nigerian legislature, with many citizens skeptical of the role of the legislature in national development. At the same time there is a lot of unsubstantiated press speculation. An understanding of the workings and role of the legislature is crucial to bridge this gap. Effective information management as well as transparent information dissemination can help to rebuild trust among citizens. By leveraging the public affairs arm of its mandate, the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs can drive stakeholder feedback, public engagement, and citizen participation in legislative activities. This capacity building workshop is aiming at improving the House Committee members’ skills on driving open governance and transparency in the legislature, restoring the confidence of Nigerian citizens in democratic governance, and managing the image of the House. Thematic areas such as the role of the media and the House Committee in promoting good governance, the relationship between media and the legislature and effective information management in different public settings will form the basis of the workshop. A technical work session will round up the training. The seminar is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to democracy, rule of law, and good governance in Nigeria.
