Capacity Building Seminar for the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges & Public Petitions
Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in partnership with the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privilege and Public Petitions and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) is organizing a workshop to build the capacity of the Members of Senate Committee on Ethics, Privilege and Public Petitions.
One of the mandates of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions is the handling of complaints or petitions from Nigerian citizens regarding infractions of their rights and administrative injustice. In the last two years the Senate Committee has experienced a huge increase in the number of petitions dealing with community crises, land disputes, the herder/farmer conflict, and interagency rivalry or overlap amongst first respondents to such conflicts. These conflicts are hardly referred to courts for adjudication but rather put before the Senate Committee. With regards to the overwhelming number of disputes of this nature and the repercussions on national security, it is becoming more and more important for the Committee members to advance their professional skills in community conflict management. This capacity building workshop in aiming at improving the Senate Committee members’ skills on community conflict management to support resolving community conflicts. Thematic areas such as conflict management and alternative dispute resolution methods, inter-agency collaboration, consensus building mechanisms, and participatory decision-making will form the basis of the training. A technical work session will round up the training. The seminar is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to democracy, rule of law, and good governance in Nigeria.
