According to UNHCR, around 2 million persons are considered internally displaced and have to be accommodated and provided with humanitarian relief in Nigeria. The policy dialogue will explore the underrepresentation of IDPs in the Nigerian media and discuss ways to draw more public attention to the issue. The lead presentation shall be delivered by Hon. Sani Zorro, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on IDPs, Refugees and Initiatives on North East, followed by another presentation from José Anthonio, the Resident Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Nigeria and ECOWAS. Both presentations shall look at the national as well as regional dimensions of displacement in Nigeria and assess the role of the media in alleviating the challenges faced by displaced persons, government agencies and civil society.
The policy dialogue series serves as a platform for media practitioners and selected representatives of civil society organizations to meet, exchange ideas and work out recommendations for decision makers on issues bothering among others on good governance, security, economy and conflict management. Expected at this round table meeting are Members of House of Representatives, journalists, selected civil society organizations, government agencies and selected diplomatic missions.
