International Security Roundtable on Strengthening Cross Border Prosecution in West Africa

Security Sector Reform in Nigeria

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is cooperating with Nigeria’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Army to organize an international security roundtable in Abuja, for stakeholders from across the West Africa region, contiguous states to Nigeria and other countries with similar security challenges as Nigeria to foster the requisite synergy for effective cross-border prosecution of crimes. The two-day roundtable aims at evaluating the requisite structures and instruments that should enhance effective prosecution of cross-border crimes and initiate platforms and strategies to promote collaboration in legislation and enforcement of laws.

Details

This is a follow-up to the international security roundtable on tackling security challenges in West Africa, organized by KAS in July 2019. As part of the resolutions, stakeholders stressed the need to create and strengthen mechanisms for effective cross-border prosecution to prevent criminals from hibernating in ungoverned spaces across borders to plan and perpetrate criminal activities.

The roundtable will review gaps, challenges and inhibiting provisions in internal, bilateral and multilateral agreements and charters that hamper effective cross-border prosecution and develop roadmaps for achieving the ultimate goal of collaborative prosecution of criminals across borders, thereby making countries safe for citizens and uninhabitable for criminals.

Participating countries include Burkina Faso, Chad, Gambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria among others. The roundtable is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to the Security Sector Reform in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. This program is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
