Workshop

Intercultural Communication and Social Work

The Art of Conflict Transformation in multiethnic Regions of Skopje

If one understands ”cultural” and ”structural” violence (Johan Galtung) as the root causes of direct violence, peace processes have to be initiated on all these levels and have to mutually empower each other.

Details

Conflict Transformation by peaceful means therefore needs the development and interplay of three key competencies: Empathy, creativity and the symmetric satisfaction of human basic needs of all conflict parties.

During the two days workshop the trainers will introduce the specific TRANSCEND method of conflict transformation. For a concrete understanding of this method of peaceful conflict resolution strategies the case study approach is primarily used. So focus is given especially on the current dimension of social and cultural conflict constellations, which we can empirically find in multinational and multiethnic regions of Skopje, especially in the municipal Chair. Under the objective for a better intercultural communication between the diverse nationalities and ethnic groups in Macedonia, we are going to ask, how the TRANSCEND method could be implemented in the daily work of pedagogues and social workers.

The TRANSCEND method tries to uncover and transform the systemic deep dimensions. It especially addresses the reciprocal relations of ”deep cultures”, ”deep structures” and ”human basic needs”, that define and guide conflict handling styles subconsciously.

The TRANSCEND method is a model for conflict transformation, that is structured by six dimensions and movements. The ”6-Step Model” will be explored together with participants in a very interactive way, using methods such as role plays and small group exercises. Participants will be asked to bring in their own experiences.
