Water, energy and stability are inextricably linked to one another. Water is mandatory in the processes of production, distribution and use of energy. Energy is necessary for the extraction, desalination and distribution of safe drinking water. Access to clean water can therefore be a warrantor for regional stability. This essential relationship of water and stability is a topic of increasing importance. The Middle East is a key region, where an ever higher water demand leads to an aggravation of long-lasting conflicts, challenging regional stability and security.
The main objective of the expert discussion is to raise awareness of the importance of water as guarantor for regional stability and to tackle the water-security-nexus in the Middle East. It furthermore recalls the shared responsibility of the conflicting parties in the region to cooperate in finding solutions for the urgent needs of their people.
The meeting will give occasion to discuss among governmental officials from the region, the EU institutions as well as military and civilian experts in the field of water and security.
