Similar goals: The Palestine Investment Conference and KAS Ramallah support the development of a prosperous Palestinian

The Palestine Investment Conference 2010 in Bethlehem brought together a large number of investors, government representatives and international agencies. The goal of the conference is the establishment of a viable private sector and the foundation of Social Market Economy in the Palestinian Territories. The KAS Ramallah and the Institute of Law at Birzeit University, a long-term partner, share this goal and support the implementation of social and market based structures in the Territories.

This year’s conference — the second after 2008 — focuses on the prospects for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). In his opening speech, President Mahmoud Abbas called for international cooperation to achieve economic benefits for all Palestinians in the West Bank and in Gaza. This vision concords with Prime Minister Salam Fayyad´s plan to implement sweeping economic reforms and clean out corruption.

The participation of delegations from almost 30 countries and the signing of over 100 contracts worth around $820m have to be seen as part of an ambitious nation-building process. The necessary underpinning of a viable Palestinian state through the development of an institutional, social and economic infrastructure has therefore obtained a vital stimulus.

The Palestinian Business Law Guide is the contribution of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Institute of Law to achieve these goals. The manual aims at helping potential investors find their way into the new business and regulatory environment in the Territories and clarifies the legal environment of investment. The KAS Ramallah is therefore fully supporting the causes of the Bethlehem conference.
