The Philippines is often described as a flawed or defective democracy. Political dynasties dominate elected positions, while disinformation networks distort the information ecosystem. International watchdogs have raised concerns over the impunity surrounding violence against activists, journalists, and environmental defenders. Economic inequality remains among the highest in East Asia. Observers have long noted the challenges of presenting viable alternatives to the current political system. As a result, many Filipinos withdraw from political discussions. Engaging in politics is perceived as too divisive, too risky, or best left to the nation’s elites.
#ShareKoLang: A deliberative democracy dialogue sought to shift the tone of the political conversation. The event was held last September 1, 2024, at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s (KAS) office in Makati City, Philippines.
The dialogue’s highlights are the following:
- #ShareKoLang expanded KAS Philippines' reach from engaging political figures and civil society leaders to including 'everyday Filipinos' in democratic deliberation.
- Most participants felt they had ample opportunity to speak and learn from others. The well-being tracker showed growing enthusiasm, indicating the forum fostered an enriching space for political discussion.
- Participants had diverse aspirations, ranging from establishing a cooperative in their community to improving young people's access to digital tools. Though some of these goals initially conflicted, they ultimately developed shared solutions centred on the common good.
