The Indo-Pacific is of critical importance in global maritime trade and stability, and no region is more strategic than the South China Sea. The South China Sea is a potential flashpoint for conflict due to a complex web of territorial and maritime claims involving the area. Together with keeping the seas safe and secure, preserving the region's marine ecosystem for future generations is also a shared obligation.

The Philippines’ advocacy of a rules-based international order and focus on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the foremost authority on ocean governance, providing legal mooring for initiatives to address developments in the South China Sea, including through the 2016 Arbitral Award. In light of the strategic importance of this region to the world, the approach must take into account the interests of claimant and non-claimant states in and outside the region and their contributions to strengthening the anchors of UNCLOS in the maritime governance of the South China Sea and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

It is in this context that the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Philippines, in partnership with the Foreign Service Institute Philippines (FSI Philippines), will host the "Dialogue on Maritime Governance in the South China Sea" to be held on 16-17 August 2023. Catch the livestream of the following sessions on FSI Philippines' Facebook page:
