While Arab militaries have always played a significant role in the MENA region politics, their prominence in domestic affairs and their level of interventionism varied from one country to another and from one period to another. As in 2011, Arab militaries are playing a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the 2019 popular movements. Civil-military relationships are being renegotiated in the MENA region. After Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Syria in 2011, the voices of dissent and the calls for change are now also heard in Algeria, Sudan, Iraq, and Lebanon. Through a comparative overview of the different reactions of the military with respect to the recent uprisings, this paper aims at exploring prospects for change on the mid and long terms.
