The 3rd Election Bridge Academy, Mombasa, Kenya

by Cynthia Chigwenya

Training a New Generation of Young African Leaders.

This year’s E-lection Bridge Academy, held from 15 – 19 April, welcomed 18 young politicians from both ruling and opposition parties to Kenya’s second largest city, Mombasa. A key feature of the programme were guest lectures, including one by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Regional Electoral Advisor, Robert Gerenge and Kenya’s former Deputy Minister of ICT, Innovations & Youth, Nadia Abdallah Ahmed. The participants used the training for networking and to exchange experiences in their professional pursuits and political careers. The Election Bridge Academy plays a vital role in establishing a network of like-minded youth leaders who are politically astute and trained to uphold democratic principles in their constituencies and the continent, overall.

The E-lection Bridge Academy is organised and coordinated by the PolDiSSA programme at KAS. The programme branches off the annual E-lection Bridge conference, named from a conjoin of electronic and election and aims to connect experts and leading actors in political communication to share experiences in enhancing electoral democracies. The academy was specifically designed for youth leaders and young politicians seeking to run for political office, understand and analyse electoral processes and meaningfully contribute to initiatives within their political party and/ or community. This year’s edition was hosted in Mombasa and includes participants from Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. The main convenor is Dr. Wilhelm Hofmeister, author of Political Parties Shape Democracy, fellow and lecturer at the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf in Germany.
