In his article, Prof. Manfred Lange addresses the urgent water and energy security challenges faced by the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region and illustrates these challenges along the example of Cyprus. The unsustainable extraction of groundwater, including fossil water reservoirs, along with the disparity between water demand and supply, pose a threat to water security. Additionally, declining precipitation rates and the impacts of climate change increase the challenges felt by the countries in region.
