Details

The Conference under the title "War Crimes in Prijedor and its Surroundings - Messages for the Future" will be held on May 31, 2024, in Sarajevo, supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's Rule of Law Programme South East Europe and organized by NGO Pravnik, UNDP BiH, and the City of Sarajevo.

The sombre event will begin with a screening of the names of children killed during the war in Prijedor projected onto Sarajevo City Hall, followed by the reopening of photographer Fabrice Dekoninck's exhibition "Between Fears and Hopes" documenting genocide and ethnic cleansing sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The main international conference will examine the importance of legally established facts from ICTY/IRMCT verdicts on Prijedor war crimes from an international law perspective. Panellists include former ICTY prosecutor Alan Tieger, IRMCT representatives, journalist Roy Gutman who covered the Bosnian war, documentary filmmaker Maggie O'Kane, photographer Dekoninck, and a Prijedor witness Fikret Alić.

A second panel will allow the survivors to share firsthand experiences from the infamous Prijedor concentration camps during the ethnic cleansing campaign. Students from an elementary school delivered poignant messages about remembrance and peace for the future.

By convening legal experts, journalists, survivors and the next generation, the conference casts a spotlight on seeking justice and deriving lessons from the horrific war crimes in Prijedor through documentation, testimony and international law. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation's support facilitates this dialogue on upholding rule of law principles.
