In our new podcast "Rule of Law Rules" we talk to international experts about opportunities and challenges for human rights in the digital age. We take a look at the different regions of the world. The content will focus on data protection issues, legal tech and the use of artificial intelligence.

“Rule of Law Rules” is our new podcast on rule of law in the age of digitalization from the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. The host of the podcast is Dr Angela Daly, a socio-legal scholar of digital technology. In each episode she interviews one international expert about the opportunities and challenges for human rights in the digital age. The podcast will broadly deal with 3 themes, namely, data protection, legal technology and artificial intelligence. We will gain insights into recent developments from different parts of the world.

Episode 6: Our guest Lee San Natalie Pang

For the last episode of our first series “Data Protection” we go to Asia and take a closer look at the Southeast with Dr Lee San Natalie Pang, our expert on Data Protection. Natalie is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Communications and New Media, National University of Singapore. Her research lies at the intersection of technology and society, and her research projects are organised under the themes of digital citizenship, digital equity and well-being, digital humanities and data cultures in smart cities. We speak with her about the General Data Protection Regulation and its influence in the region.

Episode 5: Our guest Ridwan Oloyede

We take a closer look on the continent Africa with Ridwan Oloyede, our expert on Data Protection. Ridwan is co-founder of Tech Hive Advisory which is a Nigerian based start-up. They help business to achieve operational excellence through the reliable and efficient application of technology. He is also recognised as one of the top 50 individuals leading a legal innovation in Africa by the Africa Legal Innovation Award in 2020. We speak with him about the General Data Protection Regulation and its influence in African legal framework.

Episode 4: Our guest Nadim Gemayel

This time we take a closer look on Middle East. Nadim Gemayel is our expert on Data Protection. He is a politician and lawyer based in Lebanon and Qatar. He was a member of the Lebanese Parliament between 2009 and 2020 and during this time he was the head of the Technology Committee of the Lebanese Parliament. In August 2020 he resigned from the parliament. Furthermore, Nadim Gemayel is the president of the Bachir Gemayel Foundation and founder of the NGO Achrafieh 2020. We speak with him about the General Data Protection Regulation and its influence in Middle East.

Episode 3: Our guest Eduardo Magrani

This time we take a closer look on Latin America. Prof Eduardo Magrani is our expert on Data Protection. He is a Brazilian lawyer, with a Master and a Ph.D. degree in Law and Senior Lecturer of Law & Technology and Intellectual Property in Universities in Brazil and abroad. Magrani is affiliated at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and President of the National Institute for Data Protection in Brazil.

Eduardo Magrani is Post Doc at the Munich Center for Technology in Society of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He teaches and is also author of the book “Digital Rights: Latin America & the Caribbean”.

We speak with him about the General Data Protection Regulation and its influence in Brazilian and Latin American legal framework.

Episode 2: Our guest Ioana Stupariu

 

This time we take a closer look on South East Europe. Ioana Stupariu is the founder of a boutique consultancy. They are working with tech and healthcare start-ups and companies across Central and Eastern Europe to implement the highest professional standards and satisfy applicable regulatory requirements.

She is also a S.J.D. Candidate at the Legal Department at CEU, in the International Business Law stream. Her SJD research focuses on Data protection & Privacy, Internet and Technology regulation, having a special interest for the interplay between digital transformation and disruption, and law and regulation.

We speak with her about the General Data Protection Regulation and it´s influence in South East Europe and her research on data protection.

Episode 1: Our guest Frederick Richter

Our first guest is Frederick Richter. He is the director of the German Foundation for Data Protection and he gives us insights on how the General Data Protection Regulation has influenced the world and the EU/Germany in particular. Stiftung Datenschutz (Foundation for Data Protection) was established by the German Federal Government in 2013. The non-profit incorporated foundation offers a neutral forum for debates around effective and efficient data policy and develops recommendations for privacy politics.

We will have a look at the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, better known as the GDPR: How has it influenced data protection worldwide? How is data protection handled in other parts of the world? How can we establish international standards? And what will happen next?
