International Round Table Discussion on “Covid-19 Pandemic and Rule of Law”

The Rule of Law Programme Asia, KAS, and The Institute of Law for Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan co-hosted the webinar “International Round Table Discussion on ‘Covid-19 Pandemic and Rule of Law’” on April 15 and 16.

Experts from South Korea, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Australia, Germany and China were invited to come together virtually to discuss the legal challenges of the pandemic.

Dr. Manas Ranjan Ray, Head of Research at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute India, provided a broader context and in-depths medical insights to the participating legal experts while delivering his keynote speech.

In the following four panel sessions experts from each participating jurisdiction presented the pandemic situation and the ensuing legal challenges in their respective home countries.

This was followed by a lively virtual exchange among the participants during which commonalities and differences in each jurisdiction’s legal response to the pandemic have been openly discussed.

In their closing remarks, Stefan Samse, Director Rule of Law Programme Asia, KAS, and Prof. Anton Ming-Zhi Gao, Institute of Law for Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, announced that the virtual webinar is to be continued in July 2021.
