Details

According to recent studies, temperatures in the MENA are rising almost twice as fast as the rest of the world, with far-reaching consequences for the health of the roughly 400 million people who live in the region. Rapid increases of temperatures will cause longer heatwaves, and will also affect vegetation and freshwater resources, raising the risk of armed conflict. The survival of many societies, and of the biological support systems of the planet, is at risk.

Biodiversity Law has been an evolving focus of International Environmental Law (IEL). States have the duty to observe the norms of sustainable development, the duty to prevent harm to, and to care for and sustain biodiversity, as a common concern of humankind.

During the 4th MENA Environmental Law Scholars’ Conference on Feb. 27-28 in Amman, scholars and practitioners will discuss the “Law on Biodiversity, Nature Conservation, and the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Middle East and North African Region”.

As on previous occasions, it will provide a platform for sharing and exchanging information on the necessary resources, skills, approaches, and methodologies needed to equip students and future environmental administrators in the region with law and governance skills to advance the SDGs relating to biodiversity.
