Everything open ahead of Uruguay's run-off election

by Sebastian Grundberger, Jonathan Neu

Parliamentary and presidential elections in Latin America's model democratic country

On October 27, Uruguay held its presidential elections, alongside the renewal of the Senate and House of Representatives. The left-wing party Frente Amplio, led by candidate Yamandú Orsi, secured 43.9% of the votes, marking a significant increase from 2019. Álvaro Delgado, representing the conservative National Party, followed with a surprisingly strong 26.7%. Both candidates will face off in a runoff scheduled for November 24th.

The Frente Amplio expanded its representation in both chambers of parliament, capturing a majority in the Senate. The centre-right Colorado Party improved its standing with 16% of the vote, while smaller parties, including the anti-system Identidad Soberana and the nationalist Cabildo Abierto, garnered 2.7% and 2.5%, respectively. Since two seats went to the system critical party Identidad Soberana, neither of the two blocs holds a majority in the House of Representatives.

The election results have left Uruguay with a parliament divided into two nearly equal political blocs, requiring both candidates to navigate a complex and divided electorate as the runoff approaches. Additionally, two referendums aimed at expanding the pension system and police rights were rejected.
