With this conference, the Rule of Law Programme wishes to contribute to an initiative during the German EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2007 the goal of which is to formulate and adopt a framework decision for minimum standards regarding the rights of suspected persons and their defense in criminal proceedings throughout the EU. To this end, we are currently carrying out a project which consists, inter alia, of a comparative law study on the procedural rights of defendants and the accused in the countries of South East Europe. The study will be presented in the context of the conference.
