The Expo building, constructed exclusively from environmentally friendly and recyclable materials, will be used for exhibitions, project presentations and information talks. The large number of people visiting the Fan Fest during the World Cup offers a unique opportunity to promote an awareness-raising process among interested visitors that leads to a change in behavior towards the environment and the use of natural resources.
"Green Goal Volunteers will engage in conversations with soccer fans and answer any questions about the sustainable and environmentally friendly staging of the mega sporting event in the World Cup city of Cape Town. The Green Goal Expo building at the Fan Fest is seen as a precursor to the construction of the "Smart Living Center" on the Green Point Common, the publicly accessible park at the Green Point Stadium.
This information and awareness-raising center is one of a total of 41 specific environmental projects compiled by the provincial and city governments in a Green Goal Action Plan for the World Cup. The action plan, most of which have now been implemented, is the product of a three-year series of workshops conducted by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in cooperation with the environmental organization Sustainable Energy Africa (SAE) for the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Provincial Government.
This Friday, the Green Goal Expo will be officially presented to the public and the media. The intention is not least to promote the implementation of the "Smart Living Center" as a permanent facility, with educational and information offers for the South African population as well as for international visitors.
Under the motto "Bavaria Meets Western Cape Expo 2010", the state of Bavaria is celebrating its 15-year partnership with the province of Western Cape. As part of a business seminar organized by the German Chamber of Foreign Trade (AHK), the KAS presented the sustainable approach of the Green Goal concept for the World Cup city of Cape Town. The political aspirations were also presented as justification for the decision to carry out this pilot project in the Western Cape. At the beginning of the cooperation, the Western Cape Province was governed by a majority of the African National Congress (ANC), while a coalition government led by the Democratic Alliance (DA) came to power in Cape Town after the municipal elections in March 2006.
This constellation was unique in ANC-dominated South Africa. With the successful course of the Green Goal project, the KAS was able to prove that factual and issue-oriented cooperation across party lines is possible in a target-oriented manner. The essential element of "cooperative governance", which is enshrined in the South African constitution, i.e. cooperative collaboration between different levels of government, was taken into account with this project.
Green-Goal is also taking part in the "Bavaria Meets Western Cape Expo 2010" with an information stand. Here, in addition to the objectives already described, it is of particular interest to provide information about attractive investment opportunities and possibilities in the areas of environmental protection, renewable energies, waste disposal and water management. In addition, eco-tourism, nature conservation and species protection will be on show in Cape Town as a tourist location.
