On the occasion of the visit of the Former German President Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler to Arusha the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Dar es Salaam in collaboration with the East African Community is hosting a round table discussion on “Ambition for and Reality of the East African Community in a Globalized World” on 16th of June 2011 at the Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha. The event will start at 14.00 pm at Thembo Hall.
Dr. Richard Sezibera, Secretary General of the East African Community, will provide the official opening and welcoming remarks. In his speech the newly elected Secretary General will outline the priorities of his term and the challenges that the EAC is facing today.
Consolata Ndayishimiye, Chairman of East African Business Council (tbc), will concentrate on the opportunities of regional integration in East Africa, hence providing an economic perspective.
Edwin Mtei, Former Tanzanian Minister of Finance, in his contribution will analyse the challenges concerning the implementation of EAC agreements. Mr. Mtei served as the first Governor of Tanzanian Central Bank. Among other high-ranking positions Mr. Mtei held also the office as EAC Secretary General from 1974 until 1977. He is expected to draw some conclusions from his personal professional background and compare the challenges the current EAC is facing with the situation of its predecessor.
These statements will be followed by a discussion with Former German President Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler.
Dr. Bernadeta Kiliani, Dean of School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Dar es Salaam will, moderate the discussion and the following contributions from the floor.
